Frozen Mirrors, 2001

The project takes a critical and humorous approach to the social mirroring that takes place – at many levels and using many strategies – in public spaces.

The Frozen Mirrors mime what their title suggests: they are mirrors with frost covering their mirror surfaces. The effect is achieved by installing cooling devices behind the mirrors. They chill the mirror surface enough to form flower-like icy patterns on the glass as it meets the heat in the room. If a spectator seeks to see their own reflection, breathing on the surface to melt away the ice, this only generates more humidity and more frozen patterns on the surface. The project takes a critical and humorous approach to the social mirroring that takes place – at many levels and using many strategies – in public spaces.
